Symptoms

Fibroid symptoms may be unpredictable. Some women may have fibroids and never know it. Many times, fibroids don’t cause symptoms or create any problems. However, for some women, the size, location, or number of fibroids can cause symptoms and a need for medical help. It is important to know the common symptoms and possible complications of fibroids so you can seek proper care.

Common symptoms of fibroids include:

  • Heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods

Excessive bleeding due to fibroids may lead to anemia. Anemia occurs when the amount of red blood cells decreases below normal because of blood loss. A decrease in red blood cells makes it harder for the blood to carry enough oxygen to places in the body where it is needed. A woman with this condition can feel tired or weak.

Lupron Depot®

Lupron Depot, along with an iron supplement, may be recommended by your doctor prior to fibroid surgery to help improve anemia that results from excessive bleeding due to fibroids. In addition, clinical studies have shown that after 3 months of Lupron Depot therapy with iron supplement prior to surgery:

  • 80% of patients had less excessive vaginal bleeding
  • 60% showed a decrease in the size of the uterus
  • 54% showed a decrease in fibroid size

Lupron Depot was also found to relieve symptoms of bloating, pelvic pain, and pressure. Learn more about Lupron Depot.

Additional Information:

Although rare, fibroids can interfere with a woman’s ability to become pregnant and have a child. Fibroids have been associated with infertility. This complication may develop when the fibroids physically distort the uterus or block the fallopian tubes. However, for most women with fibroids, infertility is not a concern.
